5 WAYS TO CELEBRATE AN ECO-FRIENDLY DIWALI

There’s no occasion quite like Diwali to get into the festive spirit. Diwali – the Festival of Lights –  is a festival which is celebrated with much grandeur and without any bias irrespective of religion, caste or creed.  During this five-day long festival, most houses are adorned with colorful lamps while the sky is illuminated with firecrackers. Moreover, this is a time when happiness is observed in all quarters and people of all ages – from young kids to sprightly senior citizens –  celebrate it by preparing varieties of delectable sweets and savories which are then shared with their relatives and neighbors.

With Diwali just around the corner, what better way to celebrate than with your near and dear ones. The air is filled with festivities, celebration, and joy but this Diwali let’s take a step back and recognize the irrevocable damage this festival is doing the environment. It’s not just about avoiding firecrackers but also understanding the nuisance we cause to the environment – the trees, the birds, the animals and the overall Earth in general. In that regard, let us all do our bit and recognize this predicament we face by taking small steps to make this Diwali eco-friendly. There are several measures you can undertake to celebrate and drown yourself in the spirit of Diwali in a green, eco-friendly way. We have listed out five such steps, take a look:

  1. Wrap your gifts in newspaper

2. Go Earthy

Use locally made, earthenware diyas for decoration which leaves little to no carbon footprint behind. Moreover, these traditional lighting options also prove to be cost effective as it helps in drastically reducing electricity consumption and wastage during these festive days. While you’re at it, try incorporating more earthenware and biodegradable utensils instead of plastic disposables as well.

3. Go Green with Green Gifts

Instead of buying expensive electrical appliances, why not gift something thoughtful such as handmade candles or Feng-Shui plants instead. Sustainable gifting options are a great option as they can not only be personalized but also helps add a touch of love to the person it is given to.

4. Ditch the Crackers

Instead of spending time and wasting your hard-earned money bursting crackers, why not invest those resources in making someone else’s life brighter. Donate old clothes to the less privileged or plant a sapling instead. On this memorable occasion, why not share your smile and spread the cheer instead!

5. Use Organic Rangoli

Back in the days, Rangolis were made to feed the little birds and animals as they were devoid of any harmful chemicals. This Diwali, let’s take a step back in time and embrace natural colors and ingredients such as rice powder, turmeric, red kumkum, bright flowers such as marigold, roses etc. for decorating the Rangoli. We guarantee that it will prove to be an eco-friendlier and satisfying way to celebrate Diwali!
