At some or the other point in our lives, every single one of us must have considered going zero waste! After all, just thinking about the sheer amount of rubbish a single household generates can get the alarm bells ringing. The truth of the matter is that our current consumption patterns are taking a hefty toll on our planet and we need to do something about it before it’s too late. 

That being said, if we want to change the planet’s trash addiction, we need to start addressing our own trash problem first – which is why we should begin living healthier by adopting consumption patterns that can leave our planet cleaner and lighter. Thereon, if you have been trying to reduce your carbon footprint and have been looking to do your bit for the planet, here are a few pointers that can help get you started.

  1. If you’re looking to kick-start a zero-waste lifestyle, first and foremost, you need to keep the 5R’s in mind and apply it to every aspect of your life.
  • Refuse what you do not need.
  • Reduce what you do need.
  • Reuse what you consume.
  • In case you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse – RECYCLE
  • And Rot (compost) the rest

2.Ditch Single-Use Items

Avoid using single-use items and try to embrace items which can last long. For instance, make the switch to a bamboo/wooden toothbrush instead of a plastic toothbrush. Avoid using paper towels and sheets and alternatively, try using rags and napkins which can be washed and reused again.  And get rid of single-use plastic straws and replace them with reusable straws made from bamboo, stainless steel, glass, or silicone.

3.Learn to say no

Avoid hoarding up on things just because they are free. Always say no thank you to free promotional items such as disposable pens, a plastic bag, a business card even. Not only are they cheap but they serve no real purpose.



Learn to bring your own coffee cup, water bottles, cloth bags while going out. For instance, instead of opting for a takeaway coffee cup, carry your cup while going out. While you’re at it, say goodbye to plastic cutlery and jars and replace them with sustainable glass and wooden cutlery.

5.Go paperless

Wherever possible, make the switch to electronic subscriptions, statements, and notifications instead of relying on paper-based ones.

Don’t dispose of your old clothes – Rather, find a way to reuse them or donate them if they are still in usable condition. The ultimate goal of zero waste living is to ensure your stuff doesn’t fill out of landfills.

When starting out on a zero waste journey, you should remember that the goal is not about attaining perfection but instead it’s about making better choices. Fostering this mindset is not going to happen overnight but by exercising some patience and due diligence, you will get there and the planet will thank you for that.
